Castiello at Locanda de Gusti

Locanda de Gusti is one of my all-time favourites, so I was very excited to try their castiello. They don’t always have it on the menu, but if they do, and if you like bread and cheese and egg and ham, all baked together into a chewy, squishy loaf, then it’s worth the detour to Dalry….

Pizza at Wildmanwood

As a fairly enthusiastic proponent of all cheese, pizza is a no brainer, so obviously I was champing at the bit to try this newbie out. On paper, it sounds good: the same guys from Ting Thai (towering success) meet pizza guy (trained in Venice in the art of pizza, I’ve read), take over a…

Salt beef on rye at Monty’s Deli

This was a bit of a pilgrimage for me. The perfect salt beef sandwich would be my last supper, without hesitation. So, one Sunday morning, we schlepped out to Bermondsey to worship at the alter of Monty’s. Their salt beef sandwich with sauerkraut, swiss cheese and mustard on rye is utterly, utterly phenomenal. It’s only…

Cheeseboard at The Ledbury

This is absolutely the best ‘cheese from the trolley’ I’ve ever had. I actually carry round a note from The Ledbury with 2 of the cheeses I had written on it in my wallet, just in case I ever stumble across them again (and so that I can be buried with them when I die)….

Pizza at Mono [VEGAN]

A rogue entry on the cheese front: Mono’s. Serving exclusively plant-based food, Mono is part of the group who run Stereo in Glasgow, so it’s a good option for vegans, veggies and everyone, really! We went there on a busy Saturday night and it was great fun. We had a lovely waiter, who didn’t mind…

20 Inches at Pizza Meets Burger

This isn’t one I’m particularly proud of, but such is life. We ordered a 20 inch half-pepperoni, half-chicken pizza from this newcomer on Slateford Road the other day. At £10, it’s a difficult one to refuse. In retrospect, I’m not sure I quite understood quite how big 20 inches was (in the picture, the wine…

The Classic at Meltmongers

I’m not even a fan of grilled cheese, to be honest. But I’m eternally curious, and this place has a cute sign. The menu consists of, essentially, a lot of cheese toasties with various fillings. I like that they’re not too tarted up: the fanciest is probably the brie and caramelised onion, no njuda and Peruvian…

Cheese to Meet You at Cafe Domenico

This café is pretty famous in the wilds of Leith for its sandwiches, most notorious of which is The Top One, which nearly everyone who comes through the door orders. On the quest for the maximum amount of cheese possible, however, I went for the Cheese to Meet You. This one, which weighed about as…

Cheese slicer

A refreshingly low-tech option, it’s just a slicer for medium-hard cheeses that ensures you don’t get a massive thick paving stone of cheese every time you cut some. Note, this may be a bad thing for some people.

Camembert baker

The simplest of the cheese heaters, this one is a classic. Pop in a camembert, some rosemary, garlic and a splash of white wine. Put the lid on, bake at a low heat for 40 minutes or so. Remove from oven, eat some too quickly, immediately burn roof of mouth. Power through and enjoy anyway….

Partyclette grill

This mini raclette cooker is such good fun. Essentially, it’s just a little grill plate over some tea lights, but the genuine delight of being able to melt cheese on your own tiny cooker makes this such a treat.

Gigantic nachos at the Auld Hoose

Nobody comes to the Auld Hoose expecting fine dining. It’s a busy pub with a great jukebox and a classic ‘pub’ menu (burgers, chips and cheese, nachos etc). Out of curiosity, we came here to try the self-proclaimed gigantic nachos on a very busy Saturday during the Fringe.  These were indeed bloody gigantic (see wine…

Halloumi fries at The Art School

Just to continue the theme of deep-fried cheese, these aren’t for the faint-hearted. I naively assumed they’d be normal fries with some sort of halloumi twist. I was so wrong – these were simply chip-shaped bits of halloumi, deep-fried and served as it. They were bloody good though (and veggie and gf and quite cheap!)
